About this course

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the structure and function of power markets, including the roles of utilities, regulators, ISOs, and RTOs.
  2. Differentiate between regulated and deregulated market structures.
  3. Compare electricity markets by function and timeframe, including capacity, wholesale, and ancillary service markets.
  4. Describe the operation of day-ahead, real-time, and forward/futures markets, and the concept of marginal clearing prices.
  5. Formulate basic optimization problems in power systems using objectives, constraints, and bounds.
  6. Recognize how datasets are organized using object-oriented, relational, and document-based models.
  7. Explain the role of PLEXOS as a linear optimization tool for system planning and operations.
  8. Apply PLEXOS concepts across multiple energy systems (power, gas, hydrogen, storage, water).
  9. Classify generation resources by dispatchability and curtailment.
  10. Identify major transmission infrastructure elements, including transmission lines, substations, and distribution systems.
  11. Describe the simulation phases in PLEXOS (LT, MT, ST, Reliability) and their role in decision-making.
